We have an old headboard for a bed that is in good condition, but I want to paint it white for my daughter’s room. Right now it is a medium oak color. Do I have to prime it first or just paint it white? If I can figure out how to do this, I will probably do the matching dresser, too.

I’m thinking of getting a new look for my bed (i.e.- new comforter, sheets, pillows), but the stuff I found is really fun and modern with lots of brights colors, the complete opposite of my headboard. The headboard looks like it would clash with the bedding I found (it’s made of cherry wood and has a really colonial design). My parents would kill me if I ruined it, so what are some ways to make it more fun without drastically changing it?
